When discussing history it is always difficult to know from which
period to actually begin. The earlier civilizations of Anatolia
cannot be ignored. Some historians take the advent of the Turks
into Anatolia in the 11C as the "beginning". If this
were to be the case then history is limited to dating from the
nomadic Turks. It has to be noted that civilizations are never
built without foundations. Just like a wall made of bricks, they
are all established upon former civilizations. Therefore it is
quite possible to see traces of the very earliest cultures inherent
in those that followed.
For many, the scope of Egypt's historyis difficult to comprehend.
Its history spans some five millenniums, and encompasses the origin
of civilization, the rise of the Greeks and Romans , the establishment
of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic religions, the colonial era
when first France and then the English ruled the country, and finally,
a return to independence. Egypt has played an important role through
all of these eras, and today one can find monuments that evidence
Egypt's role in most of the world's historic events.
One of the great paradoxes of history is that the next hesitant
advance of European civilization - the development of the first
city - states - took place not on the fertile open central European
plains, but in a remote island to the south of the Aegean Sea which
was completely lacking in metal resources. While the glittering
mounted warrior-princes of central Europe dissipated their creative
energy in warefare, a highly cultured yet peaceful society, built
on trade and an agricultural surplus, emerged on Crete.
